Caste census of taxpayers, CTI writes to Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Amid insistence and debates over caste census, the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) in Delhi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting a caste-based enumeration of taxpayers. CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal stated that the organization aims to understand the contribution of various castes to the economy and how much tax is paid by each group.
CTI is also planning to send similar letters to the Chief Ministers of all states. The goal is to shed light on which castes play a significant role in driving the economy and whether the government considers their interests when formulating policies.
CTI Secretary Vishnu Bhargava and Gurmeet Arora highlighted that while the government already collects extensive data on income tax and GST, it is important to also categorize this data by caste. This information would reveal which caste contributes the most revenue and could lead to tailored policies, insurance, pensions, and medical facilities for the highest contributors.
Brijesh Goyal mentioned that their initiative is receiving support from various business organizations across the country. CTI plans to run a nationwide campaign with traders to advocate for this cause. The request has sparked widespread discussion within the trading community, with thousands of traders backing CTI's demand.
