Brazil: Businessman and Nine Family Members Killed in Plane Crash in Gramado

Brazil

In a tragic incident on Sunday morning, a small aircraft crashed into a commercial district in the popular tourist city of Gramado, Brazil, claiming the lives of all 10 people aboard.

The plane, a Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop, was piloted by Brazilian businessman Luiz Claudio Galeazzi, who was traveling with his family. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Canela, a nearby city in southern Brazil, and has left the local community in shock.

According to civil defense authorities, the plane struck the chimney of a building, then collided with the second floor of a house, before ultimately crashing into a furniture store.

The impact caused significant damage, with fires breaking out at the crash site. Additionally, an inn was also affected by the crash. The victims, all family members of Galeazzi, included his wife, three daughters, and several other relatives.

The 61-year-old businessman was en route to São Paulo with his family. Galeazzi's company, Galeazzi & Associados, confirmed his death in a statement shared on LinkedIn, expressing gratitude for the support they have received from friends and the community during this difficult time.

“In this moment of intense pain, we are deeply thankful for the manifestations of solidarity and love that we have received,” the company said, adding condolences to the families affected by the accident. The crash, which occurred in a largely residential area, also left at least 17 people on the ground injured, with two suffering serious injuries.

Many others were treated for smoke inhalation due to the fire caused by the crash. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, as emergency services worked to contain the aftermath of the incident.

Gramado, located in the Serra Gaucha mountains, is a popular tourist destination, particularly during the Christmas season, and is known for its festive atmosphere. The timing of the crash, just days before Christmas, has heightened the tragedy's impact on the local community.

Security footage showed the small aircraft departing from Canela airport before the crash. Brazilian authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident, with initial reports suggesting that the plane's collision with the chimney and subsequent crashes may have been caused by a loss of control shortly after takeoff.

This fatal crash adds to the list of aviation tragedies in Brazil. In August 2024, Brazil experienced its worst air disaster in 17 years when a twin-engine plane crashed in Vinhedo, São Paulo, killing all 62 people on board.

Additionally, just a day before this plane crash, a bus accident in Minas Gerais claimed the lives of 41 people, marking a particularly tragic period for the country.

As investigations continue, the people of Gramado and Brazil mourn the loss of a businessman and his family, while authorities work to determine the cause of this devastating crash.
