BJP intensifies its campaign ahead of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections amid internal protests over ticket distribution and a controversial candidate list.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is intensifying its efforts to counter the growing challenge from a resurgent Congress, which has formed an alliance with the National Conference (NC), particularly in the Jammu region—a stronghold of the BJP since 2014.

On Monday, several BJP workers staged a protest at the party office in Jammu over the distribution of tickets for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections 2024. The disgruntled workers accused the party of favoring defectors, especially those who have shifted from Congress.

This protest followed the BJP's release of its initial list of 15 candidates for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, scheduled for September 18. In an unusual move, the BJP initially announced a list of 44 candidates but withdrew it within hours, stating that those names should be considered retracted.

The deadline for filing nominations for the first phase is August 27, while the nomination process for the second and third phases will commence on August 29 and September 5, respectively.

The first list includes candidates for several constituencies in Kashmir, such as Pampore, Shopian, Anantnag West, and Anantnag.

The BJP's Central Election Committee met on Sunday evening to finalize the list of candidates. The Jammu and Kashmir elections will be conducted in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. The Haryana Assembly will also hold elections on October 1, with the vote counting for both Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana set for October 4.

In the last assembly elections held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014, before it became a Union Territory, the BJP secured 25 seats.
