BJP Targets Rahul Gandhi Over Vietnam Trip Amid Mourning for Manmohan Singh; Congress Hits Back

BJP

New Delhi: Reports of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi traveling to Vietnam during the national mourning period for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh have sparked a fresh political row.

The BJP criticized Mr. Gandhi, alleging he prioritized personal leisure over paying respects, while Congress leaders defended his actions, accusing the ruling party of using diversionary tactics.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused Mr. Gandhi of leaving the country for New Year's celebrations despite the government declaring seven days of national mourning for Dr. Singh. "The nation is in mourning, and as expected, Rahul Gandhi has chosen to travel for tourism and partying. This is reminiscent of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks aftermath when reports claimed he partied all night," Mr. Poonawalla said.

He further alleged that Mr. Gandhi’s absence disrespects Dr. Singh’s legacy. The BJP also criticized the Congress for not having senior leaders present during the ashes immersion of Dr. Singh. "No member of the Gandhi family or top Congress leadership was seen at the ceremony. If anyone insulted Dr. Singh, it is the Congress itself," Mr. Poonawalla added. In response, Congress MP B. Manickam Tagore dismissed the BJP's allegations as "diversion politics." He questioned why Mr. Gandhi’s private travel was a concern for the BJP, stating, "When will the Sanghis stop this 'Take Diversion' politics? Dr. Singh was denied a respectful cremation at the Yamuna banks by the government. Instead of addressing these failures, they are targeting Rahul Gandhi for his personal travel." Senior Congress leader Pawan Khera also clarified the party’s absence during the ashes immersion, emphasizing it was a decision made out of respect for the family's privacy.

"The cremation saw limited privacy for the family, and many relatives couldn’t attend. The immersion ceremony was kept private to allow them emotional space," Mr. Khera explained. Congress MP Tariq Anwar added that Mr. Gandhi’s trip was planned well in advance and that he had paid his tributes to Dr. Singh before traveling.

"Rahul Gandhi was present during the official proceedings to honor Dr. Singh," Mr. Anwar noted. The controversy comes amid a broader political dispute over the arrangements for Dr. Singh’s funeral. The Congress has accused the government of disrespecting the former Prime Minister by holding the cremation at Nigambodh Ghat instead of the Yamuna banks.

The BJP has refuted these claims, asserting that Dr. Singh was accorded a state funeral and full honors. As the debate continues, the political tug-of-war underscores the intensifying rhetoric between the BJP and Congress, with Dr. Singh’s legacy caught in the crossfire.

Political Analyst Tehseen Poonawalla says, "The LoP, Rahul Gandhi enjoys the same security cover as the Home Minister of India, Amit Shah and the Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh enjoy. Today, by making his personal program public, the BJP is putting his life in jeopardy and remember, Rahul Gandhi's family, be it his father, late martyr Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi or his grandmother, late martyr Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, have been assassinated by terrorists..."
