BJP MLA T. Raja Singh Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Sabarimala Pilgrimage

Hyderabad – T. Raja Singh, BJP MLA from Goshamahal in Telangana, has once again found himself in the midst of controversy over his remarks regarding the Sabarimala pilgrimage.
Singh advised Ayyappa devotees not to visit the Vavar Mosque during their pilgrimage to the Sabarimala temple in Kerala, drawing criticism from opposition parties.
Singh’s Appeal to Devotees
Singh urged devotees to avoid visiting the Vavar Mosque, a longstanding tradition associated with the Sabarimala pilgrimage. “Ayyappa devotees should adhere strictly to the rules of ‘Ayyappa Deeksha.’
Visiting the mosque renders the devotees impure,” he claimed, suggesting that the practice was a conspiracy to mislead devotees. He further stated, “Hinduism teaches that one should not bow or fold hands before graves. I appeal to all Ayyappa devotees going to Sabarimala not to enter the mosque on their way.”
Centuries-Old Tradition Under Scrutiny
For decades, Ayyappa devotees have visited the Vavar Mosque as part of their pilgrimage, honoring the legend of camaraderie between Lord Ayyappa and the Muslim warrior Vavar.
Located in Erumeli, Kerala, about 60 kilometers from the Sabarimala temple, the mosque has been a symbol of communal harmony and respect. During the 160 days the temple is open annually, devotees visit both the temple and the mosque as part of their journey.
Opposition and Criticism
Opposition leaders have criticized Singh’s statements, accusing him of disrupting the harmony associated with the Sabarimala tradition. They argue that his remarks undermine the spirit of unity and tolerance that the pilgrimage represents.
Call for Pilgrim Facilities
Amid his controversial remarks, Singh also urged the Chief Ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to write to the Kerala government, requesting 10 acres of land to construct shelters for Ayyappa devotees.
Recurring Statements by Singh
This is not the first time Singh has raised this issue. Two months ago, he made similar comments, asking devotees to avoid visiting the Vavar Mosque or Hazrat Vavarswami Dargah. Singh reiterated his stance, emphasizing that bowing before graves or participating in practices contrary to Hindu teachings should be avoided.
Historical Significance of Sabarimala Temple
The Sabarimala temple, with a history spanning over 800 years, is said to be connected to the Ramayana. According to legend, it derives its name from Shabari, whose devotion and respect earned her the blessings of Lord Rama.
Singh’s remarks have reignited debates about the intersection of religious traditions and communal harmony, with many urging for respect toward longstanding customs that symbolize unity.
