Big Relief for Consumers as Govt Begins Onion Sale at Rs 35 per kg

Government initiative launches onion sales at Rs 35 per kg in Delhi-NCR to combat price hikes, with mobile vans and retail shops offering affordable onions sourced from buffer stocks.

Starting today, residents of Delhi-NCR will benefit from a government initiative to curb soaring onion prices, offering the essential vegetable at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg. The price surge, attributed to a 20% production shortfall across Kharif, late Kharif, and Rabi seasons due to poor rainfall, has pushed onion prices above Rs 60 per kg in the region.

In response, the government, through the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF), has launched mobile vans and retail shops to provide onions at reduced rates. The sale will begin at 38 locations, including Krishi Bhawan, Rajiv Chowk Metro Station, and parts of Noida. Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi will inaugurate the initiative from Krishi Bhawan.

NCCF has maintained a buffer stock of onions sourced directly from farmers in Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The objective is to enhance local supply, protect consumers from high prices, and eliminate intermediary profits. The buffer stock will ensure that onions are sold at affordable rates, offering relief to households impacted by rising food prices.

The government has been actively monitoring the onion supply chain to maintain stability. Last month, it was reported that India exported 2.6 lakh tonnes of onions till July this fiscal year, with the average procurement price of onions for the buffer stock being significantly higher than last year.

This market intervention aims to improve the availability of onions while stabilizing prices for consumers, providing much-needed relief in the national capital region.
