BIG BREAKING, Subramanian Swamy moves Delhi High Court, over Rahul Gandhi's citizenship issue

Rahul Gandhi

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court seeking a directive for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to take action on his request to revoke the Indian citizenship of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Swamy's plea, submitted through advocate Satya Sabharwal, is expected to be heard by the court next week.

The petition stems from Swamy's 2019 letter to the MHA, in which he alleged that Rahul Gandhi had declared British nationality while serving as a director and secretary for a UK-based company, Backops Limited, in 2003. According to Swamy, Gandhi listed his nationality as British in the company's annual returns filed in 2005 and 2006, as well as in the dissolution application in 2009. Swamy contends that this violates Article 9 of the Indian Constitution and the Citizenship Act of 1955.

Swamy claims that despite more than five years passing since his initial request, the MHA has yet to clarify its decision on the matter. In response to Gandhi's refusal to provide an explanation, Swamy's associate, Advocate Satya Sabharwal, has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) questioning the MHA's inaction. Swamy also suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might be under pressure from Sonia Gandhi to refrain from pursuing the case.

The Delhi High Court is expected to take up the matter next week.
