Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested on Thursday that India, China, and Brazil could serve as mediators in potential peace talks regarding the Ukraine conflict. Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Putin highlighted that a preliminary agreement between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators, reached early in the war in Istanbul but ultimately not implemented, might provide a foundation for future negotiations.

Putin emphasized his respect for these countries, noting their sincere interest in resolving the conflict. He mentioned that he maintains regular contact with leaders from these nations and trusts their commitment to understanding the complexities of the situation.

In recent months, India has become increasingly vocal about its role in facilitating dialogue on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advocated for diplomatic solutions and reiterated India’s stance of supporting peace, following his visits to both Moscow and Kyiv. During a press conference in Poland on August 22, Modi expressed India's belief that conflicts cannot be resolved on the battlefield and emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.

Modi, during his visit to Kyiv, assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of India’s commitment to peace and highlighted that India had never been a neutral observer but always supported efforts towards resolution. He also informed Putin of his visit to Ukraine and expressed India’s willingness to contribute to diplomatic efforts for a peaceful resolution.

Putin's remarks come after he had previously dismissed negotiations during Kyiv’s military actions in the Kursk region. Now, he has indicated readiness for talks, but based on terms from the previously discussed Istanbul deal, the specifics of which remain undisclosed.
