BIG BREAKING, '.. identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants..', Jharkhand High Court directs Soren government

Jharkhand

In a major decision, the Jharkhand High Court issued an order to the Hemant Soren government to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants residing in the Santhal Parganas region of the state. The directive was given by a Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice Arun Kumar Rai during a hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by activist Daniel Danish concerning illegal immigration.

The court instructed the government to initiate a campaign to verify the original residents of the area. The court emphasized that documents such as ration cards, Aadhaar cards, and voter IDs should only be issued after thorough verification of land documents and domicile status. The bench highlighted the serious concerns posed by illegal immigration from the neighboring country, stating it was a significant issue for both the state and the central government.

The petitioner, Daniel Danish, informed the court that illegal immigrants have settled in six districts of Santhal Parganas—Deoghar, Dumka, Sahibganj, Pakur, Godda, and Jamtara—leading to notable demographic shifts. He pointed out that the tribal population in the region has decreased from 44.67% in 1951 to 28.11% in 2011, while the minority population has risen from 9.44% to 22.73% over the same period.

This court order comes at a time when Bangladesh is experiencing significant unrest, prompting some to flee to India. However, attempts to cross the border have been largely thwarted by the Border Security Force (BSF). The court will revisit the matter on August 22.
