Bastar

Jagdalpur, December 11, 2024: Acting on the directives of Collector Haris S, the Bastar district rescue team successfully freed 14 bonded laborers from Karnataka. In addition to ensuring their release, the team also facilitated the payment of overdue wages totaling ₹3,28,500 to the rescued workers.

Details of the Rescue Operation

The workers, originally from villages Nainnar in Tokapal Tehsil and Bispur in Darbha Tehsil, had been taken to Bableshwar, Vijayapura, Karnataka, under the pretext of harvesting maize and grapes. However, they were later held against their will.

The issue came to light when Toraka, son of Deva, filed a formal complaint with the district administration on November 4, 2024, reporting that 10 laborers from these villages were being held captive by a contractor named Bharat, son of Late Liti.

Taking immediate cognizance of the matter, Collector Haris S formed a five-member rescue team, which left for Karnataka on November 30, 2024.

Successful Rescue and Compensation

Upon reaching the site, the rescue team freed not just the 10 initially reported laborers but a total of 14 individuals who were being held in Bableshwar, Vijayapura. The team also ensured the laborers received ₹3,28,500 in unpaid wages before safely bringing them back to Jagdalpur.

Official Statement

The Labor Officer in Jagdalpur emphasized the swift action taken under the leadership of Collector Haris S, highlighting the district administration's commitment to addressing labor exploitation and ensuring justice for vulnerable communities. This rescue operation underscores the district's proactive approach in safeguarding workers' rights and upholding dignity in labor practices.
