Bangladesh regime change, Congress leader says could happen in India too
Congress leader Salman Khurshid remarked on Tuesday that the unrest seen in Bangladesh could potentially happen in India as well, despite appearances of normalcy. Khurshid made these comments during the launch of the book "Shikwa-e-Hind: The Political Future of Indian Muslims" by scholar Mujibur Rahman.
Khurshid noted, “Everything might appear normal in Kashmir and here as well. We might be celebrating victories, but some believe that our successes, including those in 2024, could be minor and that there is still much work to be done.”
According to the news agency PTI, Khurshid highlighted that the situation in Bangladesh, which experienced a wave of violent anti-government protests in July leading to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and flight, might be mirrored in India. He pointed out that while the situation in Bangladesh has led to ongoing political turmoil, including violent incidents and arson, similar unrest could potentially be contained in India due to different factors.
Despite the current calm on the surface, Khurshid warned of underlying issues, stating, “The reality is that beneath the surface, other things are happening. The kind of spread seen in Bangladesh does not occur in our country in the same way.”
During the same event, Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Jha also spoke, referencing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) protests, including the Shaheen Bagh movement. Jha noted that the movement did not receive the attention it deserved, emphasizing, “The success of Shaheen Bagh should not be measured solely by its scale. Remember, when Parliament faltered, the streets became vibrant".
