Bajrang Punia, Olympic medallist and politician, files a police complaint after receiving a death threat via WhatsApp, warning him to leave Congress

Wrestler-turned-politician Bajrang Punia filed a police complaint on Sunday after receiving a death threat via WhatsApp from an unknown individual using a foreign number. The message demanded that Bajrang "leave the Congress" or face consequences for both him and his family. The threat came just two days after Punia was appointed working chairman of the All India Kisan Congress.

The message warned Punia that it was the final warning before the upcoming elections, asserting the sender’s power. Sonipat SP Ravindra Singh confirmed that an investigation is underway to identify the source of the threat.

The Olympic medallist joined the Congress on September 6, along with fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat, ahead of the Haryana Assembly polls. While Vinesh is contesting for the Julana Assembly seat, Bajrang now leads the Congress's farmer wing. Their political entry sparked verbal attacks from former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who had been accused of sexual harassment by the wrestlers last year. Singh dismissed their chances in the upcoming elections and criticized Vinesh's Olympic disqualification, leading to a strong response from Bajrang, who condemned Singh’s remarks as unpatriotic.

Punia and Phogat had been at the forefront of protests against Singh in 2023, which resulted in his eventual trial. Singh has denied the allegations and maintains his innocence.
