India's EAM Dr S Jaishankar met Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) Saleumxay Kommasith. "Witnessed exchange of MoUs on 10 Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) for Laos under Mekong Ganga Cooperation and cooperation in sharing successful Digital Solutions. Launched a special stamp set celebrating our shared cultural treasures of Ramayana and Buddhism," tweeted EAM Jaishankar.

A special commemorative postage stamp set by Lao PDR, showcasing the deep civilizational connect between Lao PDR and India, was unveiled jointly by Dr. S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister (EAM) of India, and H.E. Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lao PDR, in Vientiane on 27 July 2024.

Dr. Jaishankar is visiting Vientiane for ASEAN-India Post Ministerial Conference (PMC), EAS Foreign Ministers Meeting and ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) that Lao PDR is hosting in Vientiane being the ASEAN Chair for 2024. The stamp set, consisting of two stamps, depicts Lord Buddha of the city of Luang Prabang, the ancient capital of Laos, and Lord Shri Ram of Ayodhya, the sacred capital city of Lord Ram. The ties of Buddhism have bound India and Lao PDR together since millennia. Ramayana (Lao version is called Ramakien or the Story of Phra Lak Phra Ram) is revered in Laos like in India, and is performed on auspicious occasions. The theme of the stamp set is therefore aptly “Celebrating shared cultural heritage of Lao PDR and India”.
A unique feature of the stamp set is that the postage stamp by Lao PDR on Lord Shri Ram is the world’s very first stamp depicting Shri Ram Lalla of Ayodhya.
