Avian flu outbreak in Ranchi poultry farm, thousands of birds culled, state govt alert

Avian flu outbreak at Ranchi’s state-run poultry farm forced the authorities to order culling of 2,196 birds. The Jharkhand government has issued an alert after bird flu cases were reported in a state-run poultry farm in Ranchi.

As many as 2,196 birds including 1,745 chickens were culled at the Regional Poultry Farm, Hotwar, it was confirmed.

Authorities have confirmed that presence of H5N1, a type of avian influenza A virus that causes disease in birds, got  confirmed in the samples sent to the ICAR-National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal.

The Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying has also swung into action and has asked the state to take all measures to contain the spread.

Measures such as declaration of infected and surveillance areas and restricting access to infected premises, destruction of birds and disposal of dead birds and infected material have been initiated.
