Autos, taxi to go on two day strike, Delhi residents to face brunt

Delhi-NCR transportation strike August 22-23, impacting 400,000 vehicles, due to auto and taxi unions protesting app-based cab services like Ola and Uber.

Delhi residents should brace for significant transportation disruptions on August 22 and 23, as over 15 auto and taxi driver unions in Delhi-NCR have called for a two-day strike. The strike, which is expected to remove nearly 400,000 vehicles from the roads, aims to protest the growing impact of app-based cab services on drivers' livelihoods.

The unions argue that services like Ola and Uber have severely diminished their earnings due to high commissions imposed by app companies. Despite repeated appeals to both central and state governments, the unions claim that no substantial action has been taken to address these issues. They are now calling for government intervention to tackle the problems caused by app-based services.

Kishan Verma, President of the Delhi Auto Taxi Transport Congress Union, criticised the government's handling of the situation, stating, "We have been raising these concerns for years without a response. These companies operate with substantial influence, and we are demanding an end to this situation. The issues of employment and illegal activities linked to app-based taxis must be addressed."

The strike will see a suspension of all auto and taxi services across Delhi-NCR, affecting more than 100,000 cabs and autos. Unions involved include the Taxi Driver Army Union, Delhi Auto Tricycle Driver Union, and Rajdhani Tourist Driver Union.
