Assam reports first HMPV case, 10-month-old child tests positive

HMPV

Assam has reported its first case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) for the season, with a 10-month-old child testing positive for the virus in Dibrugarh.

The infant, who was admitted to Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) four days ago with cold-like symptoms, is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in stable condition, according to officials.

The HMPV infection was confirmed after test results from the Lahowal-based ICMR-Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC) came in on Friday.

Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bhuyan, superintendent of the state-run AMCH, explained that samples are routinely sent to ICMR for testing in flu-related cases.

“It was during this routine testing that the HMPV infection was detected. The child is stable now. It’s a common virus, and there is no cause for concern,” Bhuyan added. Dr. Biswajit Borkakoty, a senior scientist at ICMR-RMRC in Lahowal, noted that since 2014, 110 cases of HMPV have been detected in Dibrugarh, with this being the first case of the season.

He reassured that such cases are common and nothing out of the ordinary. HMPV is a respiratory virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms.
