Assam CM scraps two hour Namaz break of state assembly, former Deputy CM slams move

Assam Assembly ends Friday break for Jumma prayers, sparking criticism from Tejashwi Yadav and AIUDF over alleged targeting of Muslim legislators by the Assam government ahead of the 2026 elections.

Assam

The Assam Assembly recently ended a long-standing tradition of a two-hour break on Fridays, which had been used by Muslim legislators to offer Jumma prayers. This change came with the amendment of Rule 11 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business, eliminating the special Friday recess.

Reacting to the decision, former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of seeking "cheap popularity" by targeting Muslims. Yadav claimed that Sarma's actions were an attempt to gain attention by making Muslims a "soft target" and criticized the BJP for allegedly spreading hatred against the Muslim community.

Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the move, stating that it was a step toward increasing productivity in the assembly and shedding remnants of colonial practices. He noted that the break was originally introduced by the Muslim League’s Syed Saadulla in 1937 and expressed gratitude to the Speaker and legislators for the "historic decision."

An AIUDF Muslim MLA criticized the change, arguing that it was unnecessary and part of a broader strategy by the BJP-led government to target the Muslim community ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Meanwhile, Tejashwi Yadav reiterated that Muslims played a significant role in India's freedom struggle and vowed to protect their rights, accusing the BJP of trying to marginalize them.
