ASI

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) resumed its survey in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, for the second consecutive day, focusing on the ancient Krishna Koop near the Kalki Vishnu Temple. This temple is located just 500 meters away from the historic Shahi Jama Masjid.

Survey Highlights

The ASI team, accompanied by local administration officials, conducted an extensive survey of Krishna Koop, an ancient structure adjacent to the temple gate. Surrounded by 5-foot-high walls, the Koop (well) was found covered with overgrown bushes and debris.

This survey follows the discovery of various historical structures in the region, which have drawn attention due to their religious and cultural significance.

Rediscovery of Heritage

The Kalki Vishnu Temple has gained attention since 2021, when Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site. The ASI team is now documenting the temple’s architecture, including the dome and surrounding areas.

A board near the temple highlights the historical importance of the site, further validated by recent surveys. On Friday, the ASI surveyed five pilgrimage sites and 19 wells, making a total of 24 locations in the region. Among these was the Kartik Mahadev Temple, which was reopened on December 14, 46 years after it was closed during communal unrest in 1978.

Key Findings and Observations

The ASI team captured photographs of the dome inside the Kalki Temple. The survey included discussions with temple priests to gather insights about the site's history. Local authorities ensured that the survey was conducted discreetly due to security concerns.

Historical and Cultural Context

Sambhal has long been recognized for its ancient religious and cultural heritage. The recent ASI activities aim to shed light on previously overlooked aspects of its history. On Friday, the team was seen examining a temple in the Ladam Sarai area, studying ancient stones and architectural elements. Sources suggest that the ASI requested the administration to limit media coverage to maintain confidentiality during the survey. Sambhal's District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia confirmed that the ASI’s findings would provide new perspectives on the region’s historical significance.

Rediscovery of a Long-Lost Temple

The Kalki Temple is not the only rediscovery in Sambhal. During a recent search operation, authorities stumbled upon a previously unknown temple in Deepa Rai that had remained closed since 1978. Located just 200 meters from a local MP’s residence, this temple was reopened for worship on December 15.

Future Prospects

The ASI’s ongoing surveys in Sambhal have sparked significant interest, with expectations of uncovering new historical insights. By focusing on the Krishna Koop and other ancient sites, the ASI aims to highlight Sambhal’s rich heritage and contribute to preserving its historical landmarks.

These efforts mark a step forward in protecting India’s cultural history and ensuring that its heritage remains accessible to future generations.
