Another low-pressure in Bay of Bengal, heavy rainfall likely in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu as another low-pressure area forms over the Bay of Bengal. This comes just days after Cyclone Fengal caused significant damage in Puducherry and northern Tamil Nadu, with ongoing relief efforts still underway.

New Low-Pressure System Development

According to the IMD, a new low-pressure area is expected to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal and move in a west-northwest direction, approaching the Sri Lankan coast by December 9. The system is likely to intensify into a depression by December 12, bringing heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu and neighboring regions.

Under its influence, the southern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are likely to witness heavy rainfall on December 12 and 13. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema may also experience isolated heavy rainfall on December 12.

Impact of Cyclone Fengal

The fresh weather alert follows the havoc caused by Cyclone Fengal, which made landfall near Puducherry last week. The cyclone brought heavy rains and gusty winds, resulting in widespread waterlogging, uprooted trees, and damage to infrastructure. In Madipakkam, a low-lying area in Chennai, residents parked their vehicles along the Velachery flyover to prevent flood damage, while roads remained largely deserted.

Authorities deployed civic workers, police, and rescue personnel in vulnerable areas to manage the situation. Steady rains from November 29 overwhelmed drainage systems, highlighting the need for enhanced flood mitigation measures in the region.

Western Disturbance to Impact North India

In addition to the developments in the Bay of Bengal, the IMD has forecast a fresh western disturbance affecting the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India. The disturbance is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall and snowfall to the Himalayan region and isolated rainfall to Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and western Uttar Pradesh on December 8 and 9.

Preparedness Measures

The IMD has urged residents of affected regions to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the low-pressure area intensifies. With Tamil Nadu already recovering from Cyclone Fengal, authorities are likely to ramp up disaster preparedness measures to minimize disruptions and damage from the anticipated rainfall.

As the low-pressure area moves closer to the Sri Lankan and Tamil Nadu coasts, weather updates will continue to provide crucial information for residents and authorities to plan their response effectively.
