Another bridge collapse in Bihar, apparently due to floodwaters, watch
Another incident of a bridge collapse has occurred in Bihar, with no reports of casualties. The incident took place near Pirpainti in Bhagalpur. This bridge was constructed near Mustafapur on the main road from Pirpainti to Bakhpur. It reportedly collapsed on Friday. It is believed that the bridge was damaged a few days prior due to floodwaters. Local residents were aware of this, which is why there were only a few people present when the bridge fell.
The bridge had been built just five years ago and served as a vital link for the surrounding rural areas. Its collapse has exacerbated the difficulties faced by residents, making travel significantly more challenging. Previously, a similar bridge in Bhagalpur also fell. During June and July, reports emerged of five bridges collapsing within just 11 days across various districts, including Madhubani, Bhagalpur, Kishanganj, Siwan, Araria, and East Champaran. On March 22, 2024, the under-construction Bakour-Bheja Ghat bridge over the Kosi River collapsed as part of the Bharatmala project, which was being constructed at a cost of ₹1,200 crores. This bridge is strategically important as well.
On June 4, 2023, pillars 10, 11, and 12 of a bridge under construction from Sultan Ganj to Khagaria fell into the river. Such incidents have led to political turmoil in Bihar, with leaders from opposing parties questioning each other. On March 19, 2023, a bridge in the Saran district, dating back to the British era, collapsed due to neglect and damage from floods, with no prior warnings issued by the department.
The sequence of bridge collapses in Bihar shows no signs of stopping. Recently, another bridge in the Babupur Bakhpur East Panchayat, constructed by the PWD, collapsed, completely disrupting traffic. This bridge, built two years ago, collapsed late at night, affecting a large population.
As a result, five panchayats have lost connectivity to the block headquarters and local markets. Although villagers reached the site soon after the collapse, district administration officials have yet to visit. Approximately 100,000 residents are now cut off from the block headquarters and markets due to the bridge's failure. Villagers are facing considerable hardship and are taking risks by crossing the water. However, no alternative arrangements have been made. Residents have urged the state government to provide urgent alternative solutions, especially as flood conditions have arisen due to rising water levels in the Ganges River, affecting Bhagalpur and 12 other districts.
This bridge collapse has again drawn attention in Bihar, as the vital road connecting Bakhpur to Babupur and Jharkhand failed late Thursday night. Residents of Bakhpur found the bridge collapsed on their way to Mirzachauki, Pirpainti, Kahalgon, and Bhagalpur the following morning. Tejashwi Yadav, a leader of the opposition party Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), criticized the Bihar government, stating that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has allowed corruption to flourish.
After the bridge collapsed, Bakhpur police arrived at the scene to halt vehicle traffic and erected bamboo barriers. Meanwhile, the SDO of the Rural Works Department is inspecting the situation. Tejashwi Yadav used social media to target the Nitish government, claiming that the roots of corruption under CM Kumar run deep, while the pillars of the bridges are superficial. He highlighted that hundreds of bridges worth thousands of crores have collapsed in recent months without any statements from the CM regarding the corruption behind these failures.
