Amid ruckus in Jammu and Kashmir assembly, resolution on article 370 passed

Jammu and Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly witnessed intense debates and disruptions after passing a resolution on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, calling for the restoration of Article 370 and special status for the region. The resolution urged the central government to engage in dialogue with elected representatives to address the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, which was revoked in August 2019.

Following the resolution's passage, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary expressed that the move was aimed at securing the future of Jammu and Kashmir's residents, especially as people from outside the region are now acquiring land and securing employment there. "We only spoke about the special status that was taken from us in 2019. Even BJP, if subjected to a 'narco-test,' would want the same," Choudhary commented, pointing to the BJP’s own promises of special status to other states, including Bihar and Andhra Pradesh.

The session grew chaotic as BJP members, including Opposition Leader Sunil Sharma, opposed the resolution, arguing it was not part of the official agenda. Amid protests, Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather adjourned the assembly for 15 minutes. Choudhary criticized the central BJP leadership, questioning if issues like militancy in regions like Rajouri, Chenab Valley, Kathua, and Samba had been resolved under the current administration.

The resolution emphasized that the special status previously granted to Jammu and Kashmir was essential for preserving the identity, culture, and rights of its people, and voiced concern over the unilateral revocation of these protections.
