Amid heightened Russian strikes, Ukrainian Ministers quit, including Foreign Minister Dmitri Kuleba
At least six Ukrainian officials, including several cabinet members, have resigned ahead of a major government reshuffle anticipated this week. The resignations have left key positions vacant, such as the Strategic Industries Minister responsible for weapons production.
The reshuffle comes amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and efforts to counter Moscow's advances in the east. The officials who stepped down include Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin, Justice Minister Denys Maliuska, Environmental Protection Minister Ruslan Strilets, Deputy Prime Ministers Olha Stefanishyna and Iryna Vereshchuk, and Vitaliy Koval, head of Ukraine's State Property Fund. Additionally, Rostyslav Shurma, a senior aide to the president, was dismissed via a presidential decree.
David Arakhamia, parliamentary leader of the ruling Servant of the People party, announced on Telegram that the government would undergo a significant reset, with over 50% of the cabinet expected to change. He detailed that the coming days would involve dismissals followed by appointments.
In a nightly video address, President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for a government that can achieve the results Ukraine requires. He mentioned plans for strengthening certain government areas and indicated there would be changes in the president's office as well.
Opposition MP Iryna Gerashchenko criticized the reshuffle, describing it as indicative of a broader crisis within the government and parliament. She called for a unity government and criticized President Zelensky's political team.
The reshuffle announcement coincided with a tragic Russian strike on Poltava, which killed 51 people and injured 271. President Zelensky vowed that Russia would be held accountable for the attack and reiterated calls for increased air defense support from Western allies.
