AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal Ignites Controversy, Claims Parliament Building is on Waqf Land

AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal alleges that the Parliament building in Delhi is on Waqf land, sparking controversy as Union Minister Kiren Rijiju advocates for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. The discussion includes responses from the BJP and opposition MPs regarding conduct during parliamentary meetings.

AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal sparked a significant controversy on Wednesday by alleging that the Parliament building and its surrounding areas in Delhi, including Vasant Vihar and the airport, were constructed on Waqf property. His comments followed Union Minister Kiren Rijiju's call for all MPs to support the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Ajmal emphasized the seriousness of using Waqf land without permission, warning that the government could face severe repercussions, including potential loss of ministerial positions, due to ongoing disputes related to the Waqf Board.

Rijiju, in his appeal, highlighted that India has the largest number of Waqf properties, which should be utilized for the benefit of the Muslim community. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “We appeal to all MPs to support the Waqf Amendment Bill. Parliament and municipal buildings, airports, cities, and villages need protection. We must leverage these properties for the welfare of women, children, and marginalized groups within the Muslim community.”

In response to Ajmal's claims, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticized him for engaging in "appeasement politics," noting that Ajmal's electoral defeat was largely due to losing support from his vote bank, which shifted to Congress in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Bhandari asserted, “Leaders should not insult the Constitution while pursuing appeasement politics. The Constitution upholds secularism, which means we cannot cede sovereignty to any private body. If given the chance, they would label every piece of land as Waqf land. This is why the government is pushing for the Waqf Amendment Act, aimed at genuinely benefiting poor Muslims.”

Meanwhile, opposition MPs have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to address alleged "gross violations" of parliamentary conduct during the Joint Parliamentary Committee meeting on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024. The letter accuses Committee Chairperson Jagdambika Pal of multiple breaches of the parliamentary code of conduct during the meeting held on October 14 in New Delhi.
