Ahead of Jammu and Kashmir election, former Chief Minister opines on Afzal Guru, heres what he said
Ahead of Jammu and Kashmir election, Omar Abdullah, leader of the National Conference, stated that the execution of Afzal Guru, convicted for the 2001 Parliament attack, "served no purpose" and reiterated his opposition to capital punishment.
He explained that the Jammu and Kashmir government at the time was not involved in the decision to carry out the execution, suggesting that the state would not have approved it.
Abdullah further emphasized his skepticism regarding the infallibility of judicial decisions, citing instances in other countries where individuals were wrongly executed. Afzal Guru was executed in Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013, and was buried within the jail premises.
Abdullah's comments come ahead of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, where he has filed nominations for both Ganderbal and Budgam constituencies, with the hope of winning and restoring what he describes as the "respect taken from us.
The Jammu and Kashmir elections are scheduled in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with results to be announced on October 8.
