Ahead of Haryana election, Rahul Gandhi meets Vinesh Phogat, speculations rife
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi met with wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia this morning before heading to Kashmir, sparking speculation about their potential entry into the Congress party. This meeting comes as the Congress Central Election Committee (CEC) convened on Monday to finalize its candidate list for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections.
The CEC selected 34 candidates for the Haryana polls, as confirmed by Deepak Babaria, All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Haryana. Babaria indicated that the final list of candidates will be released by August 4. He also addressed ongoing speculation about Vinesh Phogat’s political future, noting that more details would be provided by Wednesday. The anticipation surrounding her possible candidacy has heightened as Haryana prepares for its assembly elections.
Following her return from the Paris Olympics, Vinesh Phogat had previously met former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had stated that Congress welcomes all who wish to join the party. Hooda emphasized that athletes, like Vinesh, belong to the nation as a whole, and it is their personal choice whether to join any political party. He assured that the Congress party is open to welcoming anyone who decides to join.
Since Vinesh’s return, Congress leaders have been seen with her, including Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda, who was among the first to greet her at Delhi’s IGI Airport with a 'Hanuman Gada,' a symbol of victory. Deepender Hooda had actively supported the wrestlers' agitation against the Wrestling Federation of India and BJP leader Brijbhushan Sharan Singh over allegations of sexual harassment.
