After Shimla, protests break out over Mandi mosque row, police deploys water canons
After Shimla, tension escalated in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh as police had to deploy water cannons to disperse protesters amid a growing dispute over the demolition of an allegedly illegal mosque. The unrest, which began in Shimla, has spread to other areas, including Mandi, following the mosque's controversial demolition.
The clash in Mandi arose from a dispute over the Sanjauli mosque, a site that has become a focal point of conflict. The protests reflect local anger over the demolition process and the mosque's historical and cultural significance. Hindu groups are challenging the legitimacy of the mosque’s original construction permit, further inflaming tensions.
As the demolition continues, residents and activists in Mandi have rallied, demanding the preservation of the mosque. The state government has stated that demolitions will continue if the structures are declared illegal by the courts, which has intensified local protests and community division.
The protest, which started earlier in the day, saw demonstrators gathering in key areas of Mandi to express their discontent over the mosque issue. The dispute, marked by historical and legal complexities, has attracted significant attention both locally and nationally.
Mandi Superintendent of Police (SP) Sakshi Verma addressed the media, noting that the police were prepared for the protests. “We have received information from various sources about organizations calling for gatherings. Accordingly, we have made the necessary arrangements to maintain law and order,” Verma said. She added that 300 police officers were deployed and barricades were set up at the town’s entrances for routine checks.
