In a significant step towards AI self-reliance, Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, revealed that India is on track to develop its own AI foundational model within the next 10 months.

This move is part of the government's ambitious India AI Mission, which aims to create AI systems that are tailored to the country's unique linguistic and cultural landscape, similar to global models like ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek.

Speaking at a press conference, Vaishnaw confirmed that India’s large language model (LLM) will be ready within a year, with a framework already in place. "Our focus is on building AI models that reflect India’s cultural and contextual needs," he said, underscoring the significance of creating AI solutions that are locally relevant.

AI Compute Power Surpasses Expectations

A critical part of AI development is computing infrastructure, and India has far exceeded its initial GPU target. The country has secured a total of 18,600 GPUs, including 12,896 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, 1,480 NVIDIA H200 GPUs, and 742 MI325 and MI325X GPUs. With 15,000 high-end GPUs now available, India is positioning itself as a global contender in AI development.

Vaishnaw compared the country’s infrastructure to global benchmarks, noting that DeepSeek was trained on 2,000 GPUs, and ChatGPT on 25,000 GPUs.

"India now has a robust compute facility with 15,000 high-end GPUs at its disposal, which will be key in supporting our AI ambitions," he stated.

Common Compute Facility for AI Development

The government has launched a common compute facility that will be available to startups, researchers, and developers across India. This facility, which will be operational soon, will allow access to 18,000 GPUs. As of now, around 10,000 GPUs are already accessible.

"The technical partners began their work well before the finalization of the project, ensuring that the facility will be available to everyone," said Vaishnaw. Prominent GPU providers include Jio Platforms, Tata Communications, Yotta, and NextGen Data Centre.

India’s Own AI Model Under Development

In line with the India AI Mission’s goals, the country is developing a homegrown AI model. Six major developers are already working on models that could be ready within four to ten months. These models will be designed with India’s unique needs in mind, and the government has already called for proposals from AI startups.

“With algorithmic efficiency, we expect to create world-class foundational AI models in a fraction of the time it typically takes,” Vaishnaw said, emphasizing that the country will have its own competitive AI model in just a few months.

AI to Tackle Large-Scale Challenges

The India AI Mission is not solely focused on technological advancements but also on addressing real-world challenges. The initiative will target key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and weather forecasting. As part of the mission, the government has launched funding initiatives, with 18 projects already selected for initial funding. These projects span critical themes such as agriculture, learning disabilities, and climate change.

"AI should make an impact at a population scale. Our priority is to use AI for better healthcare, education, agriculture, and to tackle issues like climate change," said Vaishnaw.

The development of India’s own AI model and the infrastructure to support it marks a pivotal moment in the country’s tech landscape. With its AI mission well underway, India is poised to become a leader in AI technology, equipped with the resources, expertise, and a tailored approach to meet its diverse needs.
