Pakistan lodged a formal protest on Tuesday with Afghan authorities after Afghan diplomats remained seated during the playing of the Pakistani national anthem at an event. The incident occurred during a gathering to celebrate the 12th Rabi ul Awal, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, where Afghan diplomats, including Peshawar-based Consul General Mohibullah Shakir and his deputy, did not stand for the anthem.

Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, spokesperson for Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned the act as a breach of diplomatic norms. "The act of the Acting Consul General of Afghanistan is highly reprehensible. We are lodging a strong protest with Afghan authorities in both Islamabad and Kabul," she stated.

In response, the Afghan Consulate in Peshawar clarified that the diplomats’ actions were not intended to show disrespect. According to a consulate spokesperson, the Afghan Consul General did not stand because the anthem was accompanied by music, which conflicts with their own national policies. The spokesperson explained, “We have banned music in our national anthem, so our diplomats would have stood in respect if it had been played without music. There was no intention to disrespect the host country’s anthem.”

The incident has heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries, and Pakistan continues to express its concerns.
