Accused of molesting minor, BJP leader faces law, expelled from party
Uttarakhand BJP leader Bhagwat Singh Bora has been arrested for allegedly molesting a minor, and he has been expelled from the party. According to Almora SSP Devendra Pincha, the alleged incident occurred on August 24 in the Salt revenue area, with the police being informed on August 30. Bora, who was the block unit chief for the Salt region, was taken into custody on Saturday night.
The incident involved Bora allegedly molesting a 14-year-old girl, luring her with chocolates while she was grazing goats with her brothers in a nearby forest. A case has been filed against him under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Section 74 of the BNS, which addresses assault or criminal force against a woman to outrage her modesty. The minor's statement has been recorded, and her medical examination has been completed.
In response to the allegations, the BJP has expelled Bora from the party with immediate effect on the orders of state president Mahendra Bhatt. Bhatt described the situation as “very unfortunate” and emphasized the party’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime. He assured that the state government, led by Pushkar Dhami, is committed to taking strict action against anyone involved in criminal activities, regardless of their status or political affiliation.
State Congress president Karan Mahara criticized the ruling BJP, alleging that the party has effectively granted its leaders impunity in cases of violence against women. The Congress also staged protests across the state, condemning the increase in crimes against women and the perceived decline in law and order.
The police continue to search for additional evidence and will present Bora in court to seek his remand.
