40 Unmarried Women in Varanasi Listed as Pregnant Due to Ministry's Error, Suspected Nutrition Scam

Officials investigate mistaken listing of 40 unmarried women as pregnant on government nutrition tracker in Varanasi, with suspicions of possible resource misappropriation by local Anganwadi worker.

Varanasi

In a bizarre case from Malhia village in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, approximately 40 unmarried women received messages from the Ministry of Women and Child Development stating they were successfully registered on the 'Poshan Tracker' and were eligible for services like breastfeeding support, growth monitoring, health referrals, and vaccinations through the local Anganwadi center.

Some of these women even received messages about the distribution of nutrition supplements, leading to shock and concern among them and their families. The issue was reported to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) of Varanasi through the village head, sparking an investigation.

Officials suspect the mix-up was caused by an error on the part of the Anganwadi worker, who mistakenly marked these young women as pregnant. However, there are suspicions of a potential nutrition supplement misappropriation, as the names of these women may have been fraudulently listed to divert resources.

The CDO, Himanshu Nagpal, has ordered a thorough investigation to determine if materials were allocated under these names. If misconduct is confirmed, necessary actions will be taken against those involved.
