A massive earthquake struck Morocco resulting in killing of 300 people while another 150 or thereabouts are injured. The toll is expected to rise further and US Geological Survey confirmed that it was a quake measuring 6.8 on Richter scale.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was amongst the first world leader to express condolences over the loss of lives due to an earthquake in Morocco.
“In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time,” PM Modi posted on platform X.
Preliminary visuals signal that there has been massive devastation caused because of this quake. The epicenter of the earthquake is said to be in High Atlas mountain, about 70 kms from Marrakesh and at a depth of 18 kms as per USGS.
It is learnt that while the first earthquake struck around 11 pm on Friday night, some twenty minutes later, aftershocks measuring 4.9 on Richter scale were felt.
The most casualties were reported from provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Azilal, Ouarzazate, Chichaoua and Taroudant.
