Under heavy criticism, the Bihar Education Department has withdrawn the notice of reducing the number of festive holidays in government schools from 23 to 11 between September to December of this year. There were 23 of the holidays between this duration which the Bihar education department curtailed to 11 and it triggered a wave of protests and quite a bit of resentment.

Holidays for prominent Hindu festivals like Teej, Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami were withdrawn and even the holidays for Chhatth and Diwali festivals were reduced. While an order to this effect was issued on Aug 29, it had to be withdrawn on Sept 4 because of severe opposition from teachers, students and also opposition party BJP.

There was so much resentment that a teacher from Bihar’s Khagaria went viral for his rant after school holidays on important Hindu festivals were curtailed. The teacher identified as Sunil Kumar recorded video as his sister tied Rakhi in the school premises warned KK Pathak, the additional chief secretary of Bihar Education Department, of consequences within six months time.
