As Uttarakhand prepares to implement Uniform Civil Code, there are all kinds of reactions to the way its been done. Speaking on the issue, a liberal voice of grand old party Congress, Shashi Tharoor shared his views on the issue but also how its being handled by ruling BJP.
Uniform Civil Code visualizes one law for India, which would be applicable to all religious communities in matters of marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption. Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami has recently promised that his state would implement the UCC this year itself.
He reacted saying to ANI, “…We’ve not seen a UCC draft. We all are talking about UCC but do we even know what UCC is. Do we know what rules are going to be changed? Which community will have to sacrifice what? We have no idea. We are talking in the air at the moment….We are objecting to the fact the government wants to ride roughshod over the sensitivities of the public. We want the public to be taken into confidence, communities to be consulted, stakeholders to have a voice and then we want a proper debate on a draft, only then we can arrive at a conclusion. I don’t see any possibility of all this happening. Uttarakhand has been talking about UCC for 2-3 years, have you seen the draft?..”
It need be mentioned that central government too has expressed intent to implement UCC across the nation, a move that will fulfill another of the stated ideological promises of the BJP after article 370 was read down and Ram Mandir is now near completion.
