At least 17 students were tragically killed, and 13 others suffered serious burn injuries after a dormitory fire at Hillside Endarasha Primary in Nyeri County, Kenya, on Thursday night. Police, quoted by the Associated Press, warned that the death toll could rise. The cause of the fire is under investigation, with police spokesperson Resila Onyango stating that authorities are looking into the incident and will take appropriate action.

School fires are a recurring issue in Kenyan boarding schools, where parents often send their children to reduce long commutes and provide more study time. Some fires have been linked to student protests over academic pressures or poor living conditions. In 2017, a similar tragedy claimed the lives of 10 high school students in Nairobi.

A team led by Deputy Director of CID John Onyango and Director of Homicide Martin Nyuguto has been dispatched to investigate the cause of the fire. Kenya Red Cross is offering psychosocial support to the victims and their families and has established a tracing desk at the school.

Kenya has seen a history of school fires, with a notable rise in incidents. In the deadliest school arson more than 20 years ago, 67 students died in Machakos County. Between 2015 and 2016, around 350 school fires were reported, raising concerns over student safety and the role of protests in these tragic incidents.
